Press-on Nails

What is Press-On Nails

Press-on nails, a type of false nail, are pre-designed nail enhancements that can be easily applied to your natural nails using adhesive. Unlike traditional acrylics or gels that require professional application and removal, press-on nails offer a convenient and damage-free alternative. They come in a variety of types, catering to every preference and occasion.Press on nails is an artificial nails usually made of acrylic resin. It comes in various shapes, designs, and sizes. Usually, they are considered single-use nails, but you can reuse them if you know a few clever tricks.

Advantages of Press-On Nails

Convenience
Press-on nails are a quick and hassle-free solution. Unlike nail extensions, which require salon visits and waiting time, press-on nails can be applied at home in just a few minutes. They save you time and eliminate the need to seek help from others. While salons may offer longer-lasting polish or gel, doing your nails at home is cost-effective and convenient.

Affordability
Unlike real nail extensions, which can be quite expensive, pressed-on faux nails are relatively cheaper. Nail products also require regular salon visits for maintenance, so the cost adds up. Press-on nails, being reusable, end up being more cost-effective over time as users don't need to buy them repeatedly. Press-on nail kits are available at various price points, catering to all budgets.

Versatility
In any detail you can plot there is no limits to what you can achieve with press-on nails. Whether you adore classic French manicures or enjoy playful nail art with vibrant patterns, there's a style for every special occasion. Go on and be daring and flaunt your individual uniqueness to keep your nails beautiful and stylish.

Damage-Free Application
When it comes to nail adornment, one of the most significant advantages of press-on nails lies in their non-invasive application. Press-on nails are different from nail extensions which might become harmless but press-on nails offer the easiest alternative. Unlike conventional nail treatments which involve a little more methodology in wetting and drying, press-on nails are healthier for nails because they do not compromise the nails. The main action performed by these strengths is that they preserve natural strength and elasticity of nails. Therefore, they represent a good option for those, who want to promote their nail care without any harm to the general condition of nails.

How to Remove Press-On Nails Safely

Soak the Nails: Begin by soaking your nails in warm, soapy water for about 10-15 minutes. This helps loosen the adhesive and makes the nails easier to remove. For a quicker method, you can use acetone. Fill a small bowl with acetone and soak your nails for 5-10 minutes. This dissolves the glue more rapidly but can be harsher on your nails and skin.

Gently Pry Off the Nails: After soaking, use a cuticle stick to gently lift and pry off the press-on nails. Start at the edges and work your way around, being careful not to force them off. If you encounter resistance, soak your nails a bit longer and try again.

Moisturise Your Natural Nails: Once the false nails are removed, it's important to moisturise your natural nails and cuticles. Use a nourishing nail oil or a rich hand cream to prevent dryness and promote nail health. Massage the moisturiser into your nails and cuticles to keep them hydrated and resilient.

Who Should Consider Press-On Nails

You like to (or have to) keep your nails short or unpolished: Press-ons are perfect to put on for a weekend where you have an event to attend! Put them on Friday night, use minimal glue, and take them off Sunday evening.

You're going on vacation: Lots of people I know like to rock a fun manicure while on vacation. Press on nails are perfect for that. Just make sure to pack the whole set with you so you can replace ones you might lose while there.

You need to look good for a photo: If you are a nail biter, or generally just don't keep your nails really manicured, press-ons are perfect for those times you need your nails to look nice, like when you'll know you'll be getting photos taken (holiday where relatives have cameras out, for example).

You have a deep break: Have you ever stubbed your finger and broke a nail really deep down. Owwwieee! Press ons are perfect for protecting the nail and giving it stability while it grows out. I've done this, and it instantly feels a lot better.

You're in lock-down: If you're avoiding going to the salon in order to maintain Covid social-distancing, press-ons are a great way to get the glam claws you desire, at home.

You love having nice nails, but are cheap and impatient: Nails look great, but I don't want to pay nail salon prices. Don't get me wrong - I don't think salons are overpriced. I think the price is actually very cheap for the labour involved. But I don't prioritize my nails enough to pay for labour. I rather just do it myself, but I also can't be bothered to paint my own nails because it takes forever and I'm impatient and I smudge them.

Tips and Tricks for a Perfect Press-On Nails

01/

Design Choice
“Tips” on the end wear off with use, especially in a darker colour, the Feline Fine. For the longest wear, choose a solid, lighter colour. Anything with glued on like gems have a chance of those gems falling off. Something with a french tip or a solid nude will stay looking nice the longest.

02/

Application
Shaping the nail to your own cuticle is crucial. I've found that in my case, the cuticle side is always much too wide and too square. You'll want to file down to shape it to your nail. I'll even use little cuticle scissors first to get the right general shape and then file. Of course, false nails don't grow, so you only have to shape with first wear. Also feel free to trim them if they're too long (I like to trim at the cuticle side) or reshape the nail (I often trim stilettos into coffin shape)

03/

Removal
Apply less and less glue to pop-off repairs as the week goes on. Also, don't mind if a few pop off on the last day or two I'm wearing them - I just leave them off. And then I soak the remainder in warm water and gently pry those last few off. I'll also use cuticle oil to help loosen the glue.

04/

Reuse
The nails will wear down with use. Super sharp stilettos or nice corners on coffin and square shapes will round over time. So, I like to trim, and wear again. I may go from a super long pointy stiletto on first wear, to a medium coffin on the second wear, to a short oval on the third wear.

How To Get Press-On Nails To Stay On Longer

Clean your nail beds
It might seem obvious, but before applying press-ons, you'll want to be sure your nails are completely bare. Remove any existing nail polish (or nail enhancements) with acetone to ensure you're working with a clean, fresh nailbed. We recommend following this step even if you don't have any nail polish on—the acetone can help remove excess oils that may interfere with the longevity of your manicure.

Buff your nails before application
After cleaning your nail beds, use a glass nail file or a sanding block to give your natural nails a light buffing. Be gentle—the goal isn't to scrub your nails raw, but rather, to create a bit of texture for your nail adhesive or glue to stick to (this also helps to avoid air pockets that can cause press-on nails to pop off quickly).

Push back your cuticles
If your cuticles are on your nail bed, it could interfere with how flush your press-on nails sit on your natural nail (and therefore impact the longevity of your DIY mani). To help prolong the life of your manicure, use a cuticle pusher to gently push any excess skin back. Keep in mind that you don't need to trim your cuticles—in fact, we'd advise against it, as the wrong approach could result in cuts or nicks.

Opt for a shorter nail
As much as we love the look of long nails, they're more prone to catching on things than shorter tips. And if you catch your press-on nails on something—say, a piece of clothing or the corner of a table—they may pop off prematurely. Instead, opt for short, round or almond-shaped nails (the lack of any sharp edges on rounded nails can further help prevent your press-on acrylics from getting stuck on things).

Use the right nail size
Your press-on nail tips need to be the perfect fit to ensure your manicure lasts longer and looks professional. Take care to match every finger with a press-on nail that hugs the nail plate perfectly. If you have to force the false nail to fit flat to your natural nail, it's too small. This step is essential, if your press-on nail is too large or too small it is likely to flick off quickly. If you can't find an exact match, trim the edges of a larger press-on nail with nail scissors or clippers, file the edges smooth, and buff again, to remove any possible splintered ends that could cause the false nail to peel off quickly.

Double glue your nails
Sometimes, less is more—but that's not the case where fake nails are concerned. To help ensure your press-on nails adhere, we suggest applying a thin layer of nail glue to both your natural nail and the fake nail. The glue in the press-on will naturally be drawn to the glue on your nail and they'll “grab onto” each other, adding an extra layer of bonding.

Apply pressure from cuticle to tip
Even if you use the very best nail glue for press-on nails, simply placing the press-on nail tips onto your nails isn't enough to get them to stay. You have to apply pressure in the center of the nail for at least 20 seconds (on each nail) and simultaneously pinch the sides to get the best possible fit.

Apply finger by finger
Rather than applying all of the press-on nails on one hand and then moving on to the other, we recommend taking a staggered approach. Start with the thumb on your left hand, then fit the press-on nail to the right thumb, followed by your left index finger, then the right, and so on. This method makes application easier, as you won't be dealing with one full hand of fake nails and one hand of natural nails—and anything that makes the application process smoother can help ensure your manicure holds up.

Cure like a gel manicure
Some press-on sets come already painted and designed and need no extra work once you've applied them. If that's the case, you're all done. But if you've opted for un-painted press-ons, then we suggest seizing the opportunity to give your DIY manicure some additional staying power.

FAQ

Q: How long do press-on nails last?

A: In general, you can expect your press-on nails to last about a week or two, depending on the type of nail and adhesive used. Press-on nails secured to your nailbed with glue will typically last longer than those held in place with adhesive nail stickers.

Q: Is press-on nails worth it?

A: Press-on nails are a great alternative to more damaging options like gel polishes and acrylics. Though gel polishes and acrylic polishes may last longer, the removal process for press-on nails is much easier on your nails, and since they only stay on for a couple of weeks, they are less likely to cause any issues.

Q: What to avoid with press-on nails?

A: To maximise the lifespan of your press-on nails, avoid prolonged exposure to water, apply a topcoat for extra protection, and be gentle with your nails to prevent lifting or breaking.

Q: Why do my press-on nails fall off?

A: Oily Nails: Before applying press on nails, it's important to prep and clean your nails thoroughly to remove any oils. Oily nails can prevent the adhesive from sticking properly, leading to nails that pop off.

Q: How long do press-on nails usually last?

A: Generally, pre-glued press-on nails can last up to two weeks if cared for properly. You could stretch out this time even more for some people with gentler lifestyles and limited hand-washing routines. However, if you lead a more active lifestyle with regular hand-washing, pre-glued nails may last only a week.

Q: What happens if you wear press-on nails too long?

A: Above all, it's best to go shorter if you're really looking to get the most out of your press-ons. Just like longer natural nails that are prone to breaking and splitting, long press-on nails have more surface area for potential calamities, including snagging and popping off.

Q: Are press-on nails more healthy?

A: Press-on nails can help make your fingers look long and slender, but they can also be hard on your nails. Covering brittle, soft or damaged nails with glue, plastic or chemicals for an extended period of time can worsen existing nail problems, causing your nails to break.

Q: Can press-on nails look natural?

A: The best press-on nails look surprisingly natural while adding a polished look; a good set lasts a long time. I've long relied on stick-and-go nails—not only do they go on faster and easier than polish, they last in a way that lacquer just doesn't.2

Q: How long should you keep press on nails on?

A: In general, you can expect your press-on nails to last about a week or two, depending on the type of nail and adhesive used. Press-on nails secured to your nailbed with glue will typically last longer than those held in place with adhesive nail stickers.

Q: How do you survive with press on nails?

A: Even though you'll be applying false nails, you want to keep your fingernails healthy and free from snagging. Be sure to buff your nails with a buffing block to create a smooth, shine-free surface. This is a major key for making press on nails last longer!
